Kinja'd!!!

So I bought a gift for my Fox while it’s in the shop for a lack of spark, a used 1987 W/C T-5 for $100 from a GT. Needs a rebuild, my roomate and our friend opened it up yesterday just to find out the gears were still fine, just some bearings here and there. Now... How do I go about installing this thing to the back of a Carburated 86 2.3 Four cylinder ?

You'll need a clutch, a manual transmission flywheel, and some bolts.

Step 1: Drain fluids.

Step 2: ???

Step 3: Bleed clutch and drive!

Test mating surfaces. Drill holes and tap if necessary. Install using bolts.

Whether or not this will allow the transmission to function is up in the air.

Bellhousing too, maybe

The flywheel might work, you’ll likely need an adapter for the bellhousing as I don’t believe the 2.3 and 5.0 have the same bolt pattern.

To be honest it might not be worth it, the 2.3 put out 100hp stock when new 20+ years ago. It probably doesn’t have enough power to make use of that overdrive gear. If your existing 4spd is in good shape I don’t think you’ll gain anything substantial from a swap.

You drop in a 5.0, that’s how...

Input shaft diameter and length will be different. Guessing you *could* *maybe* *probably* grab an input shaft out of a 2.3L T5 and drop it in place of the 5.0 T5. There’s no logical reason swapping input shafts and the bearing plate would be issue, but I make no promises. See items 57-62... Then you’d just use the 2.3L T5 clutch, flywheel, bellhousing, quadrant, and cable. Any T5 shifter would work.

The gearing of the T5 5.0 is different than the 2.3 btw. First being the biggest change.

T5 5.0
1st 3.35
2nd 1.99
3rd 1.33
4th 1.00
5th 0.68
Reverse 3.15

T5 2.3
1st 3.97
2nd 2.34
3rd 1.46
4th 1.0
5th 0.79
Reverse 3.70

Because the stock 2.3 is gutless and needs it to get moving. Especially if yours has the 2.73 rear gear. Hope you have the 3.45s in your 7.5...

Doorjamb axle code:
8-2.73
Y-3.08
5-3.27
F-3.45
6-3.73

Also, the right speedo gear and maybe a driveshaft. I think the driveshafts are all the same length, but I’m not sure. Needs to be checked.

I think everyone has it covered except for one crucial part. The input shaft is different between the 5.0 and 2.3 T5.
